The End of the Phoney War on Terror?

Is the War on Terror over? Not the actual battle to stop terrorism, but the politicization of a police action?

Has even the Bush administration admitted rhetorical defeat? Has even Bush realized that you can't fight a tactic the same way you can fight an ideology, like communism or fascism?

Let's hope so, so we can concentrate on neutering al Qaeda and not on chest thumping, brow beating rhetoric.

Is the "War on Terror" over?

Petraeus: I don't know if the Iraq War will make US safer

If Bush's military chief in Iraq doesn't know if Iraq is worth it, then what are we doing there?

Petreaus Doesn't Know if Iraq War is Worth It

Here is an exchange between General Petreas, Bush's handpicked military leader in Iraq, and former Senate Armed Forces Committee Chair, Sen. John Warner (R-VA):

WARNER: I hope in the recesses of your heart that you know that strategy will continue the casualties, stress on our forces, stress on military families, stress on all Americans. Are you able to say at this time, if we continue what you have laid before the Congress, this strategy, that if you continue, you are making America safer?

PETRAEUS: Sir, I believe that this is indeed the best course of action to achieve our objections in Iraq.

WARNER: Does that make America safer?

PETRAEUS: Sir, I don't know actually. I have not sat down and sorted out in my own mind. What I have focused on and been riveted on is how to accomplish the mission of the Multinational Force in Iraq.

George Will asks the Critical Question

Even Conservatives are unimpressed with the Bush-Petreas Charade taking place on Capitol Hill.

Today, George will asks the critical question, still unanswered five years after Bush first began beating the war drums:

What is the US military mission in Iraq?

Or, as I would put it: What the hell are we doing there in the first place??

What are we doing in Iraq?

The Power of Prayer

In a small mid western conservative town, a newly arrived Atheist
couple started a building to open up their bar/tavern business. The
local Baptist Church started a campaign to block the bar from opening
with petitions and prayers. Work progressed, however, right up till
the week before opening, when a lightning strike hit the bar and it
burned to the ground.

The Church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, till
the bar owner sued the Church on the grounds that the Church was
ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, their prayer
having caused the lightning strike either through direct or indirect
actions or means.

The Church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to
the buildings demise in its reply to the court, saying the lightning
was entirely a random act of Nature.

As the case made it's way into court, the judge looked over the
paperwork at the hearing and commented, "I don't know how I'm going
to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have an
Atheist bar owner that believes in the power of prayer, and an entire
Church congregation that doesn't!"

Craig Victim of Homophobia

Please don't confuse this post with condoning Craig in anyway. I think he is a sad, pathetic man and I don't condone "cottaging" in
any way.

That said, I am shocked at the GOP giving a 30+ veteran of Congress
the bum's rush for a misdemeanor. Sure, he handled it pathetically.
Certainly, he would probably lose if he ran for re-election. He
probably should go get counseling to deal with his sexuality.

However, contrast his treatment with that of Sen. Vitter (LA), who
was outed as one of the DC Madam's johns. He is secure in his seat,
preparing for re-election next year with the full support of the
party. Legally, I believe soliciting a prostitute is a weightier
crime than public disorder. Morally, it is at least as bad as
Craig's behavior, and yet the GOP is backing him fully.

This just stinks of homophobia from the GOP. If Craig were guilty of
sexually harrassing a woman, which is a non-consensual act and
therefore much more damaging to others, I don't think he would be on
his way out.

The double standard reeks more than anything coming out of a public
restroom.
